Before I watched the movie I had read the storyline and thought about it must be a story of “The Island” in a fresh version. The truth is I just hit a half of it, I mean the classic British style really gives the movie a spiritual frames and narration. The script is based on the same name novel written by the Japanese-born British author-- Kazuo Ishiguro, which makes the mentalities of the characters more exquisite and the scene more peaceful, so that it will be involuntary for the audiences to think about the world inside the roles’ hearts.
Unexpectedly, this is not a story about revolution: Kathy (by Carey Mulligan) lived in a stern boarding school called Hailsham in her childhood and got a deep friendship with her classmates named Tommy (by Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (by Keira Knightley). And it was the place where they were told their real purpose of living is to donate their organs to their “original” until they die very likely in young ages. They were permitted to go to another stipulated place since they got 18 years old. There were still too many things happening even in the destined short lives. At the beginning I had a confusion in my mind that why don’t they just runaway since they have the” half personal freedom”? I finally find the answer when I saw the scene that Ruth knew “the original” of her is not the lady they meet through an office window, she eventually start to think about the “ultimate question”, and concluded she should feel ashamed of being made from a junk instead of thinking about who she really was. Again I said, it’s not a revolutionary epic, and I don’t mean to criticize their mentality of embracing the destiny at all. It is hard for an ordinary person to think beyond what they saw and were told. In the Hailsham, the Donors believed what they were taught since the childhood, like most of us believe the God in the life-long time. Yes, in the film our human beings just act as the God in the Donors’ world. There was no panic at least in seemingly when they faced with the death; in contrast, they even felt proud of donating themselves to “the original”. I once feel this was ridiculous but when I thought of myself who also once in a long term had a belief in mind of feeling honorable to sacrifice for something selflessly, I realized all the notions of loyalty or class we gained are based on what we were taught since we were born. Maybe in someday somewhere there will be some historical figures rising up to fight for the absolute truth, however, who probably will not come from most of us, neither do the “heroes” in this film.
Maybe that’s what we called foreordination, a story which is destined to a sad ending in the beginning. In the film something we regard as hope finally is just a dumped pilot school and a lie, something we regard as resist is just several painting and a choice of death after donate. Under the giant wheel of the development of human, we always hurry to find out the most effective solution and then the flare of the human nature will easily be ignored. So when some weak
voices said “never let me go”, will there be somebody drops a tear for them?
